Saudade (Portuguese)

Portuguese is the only language that has a noun for this feeling ...

"Saudade is 'the love that remains' after someone is gone. It is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure and well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live them again."

  1. That is surely a common thread among all humanity, and I am not unwilling to rule out that it is shared by animals too. I’d have seen dogs who have moved with their owners to new and different surroundings, who upon returning to their natal area, probe with obvious delight discovering all the sights, sounds and smells from their earliest recollections.

  2. That is very interesting. There certainly should be a word for that feeling in all languages.
